The Institute for Pacific Coral Reefs (IRCP), the CRIOBE (Centre for Island Research and Environmental Observatory), in partnership with OPT-ECO, will offer two grants in 2019 to young scientists (PhDs and Post-doctorates, under 35 years old) for research projects focused on the coral reefs of French Polynesia, with a socio-economic scope (for example : draw attention to the degradation of a species' habitat and suggest solutions).

One Grant will be available to researchers from Pacific Island States and New-Zealand, Japan, and Australia. One grant will be available to researchers worldwide. Each grant is valued at 4500€ and will support travel expenses to and from French Polynesia, accommodation, research costs while at the CRIOBE research station and communication outreach.

Selected candidates will have 12 months from the time the award is granted, to complete their research project. Within a month of completing fieldwork, the candidates will provide a preliminary report of their findings. The successful candidates will provide a final report, including at least one publication in a peer reviewed scientific journal of a high standard, in the following year. The grant should be mentioned in reports and publications under the name "IRCP – CRIOBE – OTP/ECO".

Particular attention will be paid to the communication of the study to the general audience. The awardees will have to organize, with the support of the IRCP, a visit to schoolchildren, a meeting with the local media (press, radio or TV) and the realization of a short documentary (2 to 3 minutes) on their study (cost must be included in the grant). For information, a one-day video shooting + video editing by a professional cost about 75 000 XPF (630€).
