Environmental social scientist and development practitioner — I work to contribute to transformative development solutions at the nexus of human well-being and environmental change.
I am Executive Officer of the Global Land Programme, a core project of Future Earth, and Senior Scientist at the Centre for Development and Environment at the University of Bern, Switzerland. I hold an appointment as Research Professor in Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. In my research I work to understand telecoupling (distal connections) across socio-ecological systems; land tenure, forest governance and recovery; and land-based carbon mitigation schemes such as REDD+ in the context of global climate change policies and development issues. As EO of GLP, I seek to advance understanding the role of land systems as both a cause and consequence of global change and as solutions for sustainability.
